What to do when you're just not that into your date...

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Friday, May 17 2013
Question - how do you get out of a first date when you realise they are not your type? That was last week's Top 5 of kmfm Drivetime. From your answers I compile the top five. From you came, 'tell them that you have to work?' What if your date knew where you worked and knew that work was closed? Hashtag awkward.

Honesty is the best policy was a fairly popular reply. Others thought less so, such as, 'go to the loo and then climb out of the window.' Ouch. 'Text your date from a colleague's phone and say 'Hi, this is my new number!'' I feel this would not work as your workmate wing-man or woman will be constantly receiving texts from your former date.

Angie called to say that honesty is the best policy and would outright say, "you're not my type." I asked Angie if she was an MD of a company as she is very cut-throat. She giggled, this confirmed my thoughts.

One way that seems to be quite popular to get out of a date is the 'emergency call.' You arrange for a friend to call you at an agreed time and if the date is going well you simply point out that you are on a date and will call them later, or if the date is not what you expect then you make out that there is some sort of emergency and you have to dash off. Harsh you may think. It is. It happened to our newsreader Nisha Chopra once. She said that it was obvious and will probably say she does not appreciate me revealing it. Oops.

Another Top 5 last week was 'Lame chat up lines that have been used on you.' You know the ones about the stars in the sky, 'feel this shirt - that's boyfriend material that is' and the now outdated - thanks to mobile phones - 'Here's 10p, call your Mum and tell her you are not coming home tonight.'

There is a YouTube video on how to gain a woman or a man's number. It involved a guy asking women if he could borrow their phone for a moment so they could make a call. When the women handed their phone over, he typed in his mobile number, gave back their phone and revealed what he had done. All women smiled as the guy walked off saying, "you can call me later."

There is one stumbling block though, I would not give a stranger my phone in the first place. "There's a phone box over there pal!" would be a lot of PG rated responses.

How do you fancy winning a £250 makeover thanks to Fremlin Walk, Maidstone? Perhaps it is a friend who you think deserves to be pampered. Male or female, it does not matter. Simply email kmfm with a picture of you or them and in no more than 25 words tell us why you or they should be the winner of kmfm's 'The Only Way Is Fremlin.'

You could join us for the final on Saturday 25 May in Maidstone and made over by special guests Sam and Billie Faiers from The Only Way Is Essex. Listen to kmfm to find out more or go to www.kmfm.co.uk now. Good luck.

Talk to you on your way home on kmfm Drivetime, 4-7pm.

When washing can be a real eye opener

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Thursday, May 2 2013

Now that the sun has been gracing us with its presence - I think he's been on holiday himself in Australia since last August - you can tell a lot more about your neighbours.

Have you ever noticed that you can tell a lot about who lives either side of you by the washing that they hang on their washing lines? Trendy clothes, a lot of towels, branded work clothes. Underwear that could be an eye opener. My friend lives next to someone who hangs out her thongs. They would make any staff member at Anne Summers blush

Texts from some of you during kmfm Drivetime suggested that because you are self conscience you no longer hang out your underwear for the very reasons I have given. People look and you do not want your next door neighbours to know that you are wearing a teddy bear Onesie. That is private.

One listener told me that she has a paid of socks on her washing line that have been there for three years. She does not want to touch them now but they are a "great conversation starter" when she has parties. I want to know why she left them out in the first place. Did she bring in all of the washing but those socks and simply think - "Ah, they can stay." Three years later they have been through wind rain, snow and sunshine.

Coming soon to kmfm we are giving you the chance to win an amazing seven night Mediterranean cruise. We’re celebrating how incredible the Norwegian Breakaway and Epic are by sailing you away on the Epic, on a 7 night Norwegian Cruise Line, Mediterranean Cruise

You’ll be staying in a Balcony Stateroom. Perfect view with floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to your private balcony. Plus, 13 different types of onboard entertainment including an acrobatic circus, 12 bars, 17 restaurants, bowling alley, cinema, gym, outdoor/indoor clubs, comedy club and spa.

You will be stopping off to witness the stunning sights of Naples, Rome, Florence and more. How great does this sound? All you have to do is listen to kmfm to find out how to win. Easy. Good luck.

On a final thought this week - I have to get this off of my chest - I found an ice cream man who does a 99 for £1. OK, so I thought 99s were called that because they were 99p. the fact I had found one for 1 pence more was a surprise as I had been paying £1.70 at least.

It seems 99s are not called that because of their price. An intelligant man in the kmfm office informs me that they used to be cheaper than 99p. So why are they called 99? If anyone knows, I would love to know. Please email, andy@kmfm.co.uk.

Finding out is not going to change the world but it will be my party conversation starter as I bring my socks in off of the washing line.

Speak to you on the way home on kmfm Drivetime from 4pm.

Gold stars all round

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Friday, April 26 2013

Do you remember how you were rewarded for good behaviour growing up? Not just for being good though - for taking on chores at home or receiving a good school report.

I used to be given silver or gold stars if my school work was great. We had House Points at my Infant School - The Middletune School in Sittingbourne. The idea was that the class was divided up into two or three different House Team names. I forget the name of mine but I still remember wanting to win. I was given a gold star for winning the 100 metres race every year. Yeah I'm gloating.

I was asking about the rewards you were given as a child during kmfm Drivetime last week. A couple of listeners said they were never given anything. Nothing? Surely not. Not even the honour of looking after the teacher's cactus plant for half the day. I'm convinced that actually happened at a school. Maybe my school. The feeling of such responsibility at a young age.

I was given £1 for collecting a trolley for an elderly lady when I worked at Sainsbury's once. Policy was to hand the money in. I slipped it in my sock. I thought I had earned my tip. Hi to anyone reading this who remembers me from Sainsbury's in Sittingbourne.

Kids, are you still given stickers as a reward for good behaviour? Older children do you remember being allowed to stay up past your bedtime if you were well behaved? That was the best thing ever. You would see the start of the News at 10. Previously you had only ever heard the faint sound of the chimes of the Big Ben headlines from your bedroom.

Do you remember when there used to be toys at the Doctor's surgery? They were donated but always in good condition. There was always another child in the waiting room with you though who was playing with the toy that you wanted. I never got to play with that truck whose rear load tipped back.

One of the ultimate rewards for being a good son or daughter was extra time on your Nintendo. Mums and Dads eased up with the "too much will turn your eyes square" eventually and the joy at getting to a new or even secret level during Mario Bros was met with a big grin on your face and sense of fulfillment. "I've got to level 10!" you would run out of your bedroom and shout down to your parents with as much enthusiasm as if you had won Gold in the Olympics.

Be listening to kmfm all this week to win your way in to see some of the biggest artists in the world live in concert. Rihanna, Robbie Williams, Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, and The Big Reunion with 5ive, Liberty X, 911, The Honeyz and Atomic Kitten.

Last time we gave you the chance to win 'Kent's Biggest Concerts' you so wanted the tickets that I think you would have sold a tooth or teeth...or your prized Onesie and thrown in your sibling. Good luck!

I'll talk to you on your way home on kmfm Drivetime from 4pm.

Looking back on the golden days of the 90s

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Friday, April 19 2013
I have to say that I am loving this new surge in nostalgia. The Big Reunion on TV has seen 5ive, 911, Liberty X, Atomic Kitten and Blue all reform. There are various websites too featuring articles such as 'You Grew Up In The 1990's If..."

If you remember Smash Hits magazine. You wore tracksuit bottoms with poppers down the legs, even though you knew someone would pull them open. You drew the Nike trademark tick a lot. yes, I did this. Sometimes. Mario Bros was the game to play, and I would browse the toy section of the Argos catalogue to see if I could afford anything.

Lynx shower gel and deodorant was cool and you could always guarantee you would receive a set every Christmas, and discounted wet gel was the hair product to use. I had hair back then, you see. I was rocking the curtain style.

So with all the nostalgia it was great to have Blue on kmfm on Saturday. Ok, they are not really that nostaligic, but they have been away for a while, and it is about time that they reformed properly and gave us another big hit single. All Rise and Flyby were just two of their catchiest and biggest singles. Lee's voice would always stand out, Duncan's too, Antony's would blend into the mix for the right reasons and Simon would add an occasional rap. I loved Blue.

They can all sing too. I mean, really sing and harmonise They started off by giving me an impromptu verse of One Love - another of their big hits. It sounded so good. I had to ask if Blue were back to stay and Simon hinted that if the support is there from the fans, then it is a possibility. Let's hope so. There is room for the boys to be back in the charts, and welcome they are too.

Can you name the oddest name you have seen for a pub? I was asking for your best pub names on kmfm Drivetime last week. There is the Duke with no Head in Wateringbury and the Donkey of Fire in Ramsgate. I mean, how is a pub given its name? There is the Round of Carrots, The Jolly Taxpayer, The Swan with Two Necks, My Father's Mustache, The Nobody Inn and the Oily Serviceman. OK, I made the last one up, but it is believable.

In other pressing news this week, the odds are on the Royal baby being a girl after it was said that Kate Middleton accidently nearly said "daughter" when a fan handed her a teddy bear on a recent public visit. As a result, Alexandra is the bookies favourite name.

I was suggesting during kmfm Drivetime that more common names should be brought back. What about Princess Debs? Or if the baby is a boy, Prince Dave. I was so convinced that no one has named their new baby Debs or Dave in the last six months to a year that I asked you to text me if you had. I received a lot of texts from listeners telling me that their baby dog was Dave and another called Debra.

Liz called as she insisted that her Shih tzu Deb was her baby. I was never going to win that discussion with her, even though I did try and point out that I was looking for an actual baby and she had not given birth to her Shih tzu. Oh well, some you lose.

I'll speak to you on your way home on kmfm Drivetime from 4pm.

Fairy tale comes true for newsreader

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Friday, April 12 2013
I assume you have put your hypercolour t-shirt and platform shoes away after the weekend we have given you on kmfm. It was an All 90's Winning Weekend. We played you the biggest hits from a decade that was superb for music.

It was all about reminiscing about those artists who you probably had posters of on your bedroom wall. 5ive, 911, Will Smith - when he was The Fresh Prince - as well as those classic floorfillers from Robin S and the Urban Cookie Collective. Do you remember 'The Key The Secret?' What a tune.

Not only were we playing you the biggest hits from the 90's we also gave you the chance to win the biggest thing about that decade - Friends. We had the entire ten year back catalogue for you to win and oh did you want it.

If you missed our nostalgic winning weekend, stay listening to kmfm as coming soon is kmfm's Biggest Concerts. All I will say is if you love Robbie Williams and Rihanna you will need to be listening to win! Cue dramatic, teasing drone of music in your head.

Last week on kmfm Drivetime, newsreader Jess Banham revealed that she always wanted to be a Disney Princess when she was a little girl, but it never happened. I wanted to make this happen, and Wendy's Wardrobe in Chatham were listening and kindly lent Jess the Belle from Beauty and the Beast gown. I then insisted that Jess read a re-edited princess story during each of her news bulletins.

As you can see from the picture below, Jess's dreams did come true as she read the news dressed as her favourite princess.

Music news and The Script's new song 'If You Could See Me Now' is receiving positive responses from you. I think it is one of their most beautifully written and personal songs so far. If you have not heard it, listen to kmfm and listen to the first verse you will.

Nelly 'Hey Porsche' is one of the catchiest tunes of 2013 so far. The first time I heard it I thought, 'this is going to be a hit.' It's now riding high in the top 4 of the iTunes chart. Great to see Nelly back making more big hits.

Taylor Swift has quickly turned into a hit maker with every one of her songs going top 5. '22' is her latest single and the third from her huge selling album, 'Red.' To think, Swift is only twenty-two years old and has sold twenty six million albums globally. Quite impressive.

I'll speak to you on your home on kmfm Drivetime from 4pm.

Ever wondered what faded stars are doing now?

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Friday, April 5 2013
News late last week reached KentOnline that Rik Waller has lost his voice and now is an exam invigilator, runs a mobile disco, married a fan and wants to be called Richard.

In a nutshell, that is what the former Pop Idol star is now doing. Which led me to ask you on kmfm Drivetime past celebrities, and what they are doing now. What ever happened to Timmy Mallet? We saw him on I'm A Celebrity two years ago, but what does he actually do now? Is he still wearing loud clothes? Remember Betty Boo? Not to be confused with Betty Boop, Boo was a singer in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She is now writing songs.

Remember Jimmy Nail? An actor who had a rather good number one hit single, 'Ain't No Doubt.' Well I liked it. He is writing a musical.

Cast your mind back to the early Grange Hill. Do you remember Danny Kendall? He was always getting a telling off in the TV show. He is now a journalist for the Financial Times. Zammo - real name Lee Macdonald - runs a key cutting shop in London.

The Big Reunion on ITV2 has been a huge hit. Boyband 5ive in particular have brought back some great memories by performing their hits such as "Everybody get Up" and "Keep on Movin.'" Jay Brown famously refused to take part in the reunion. There was no mention on why or what he is doing. Well, he is simply living in Wales, writing and producing for music artists. That is great, but all 5ive fans, including me, wanted to see him walk in at the end and say, "Hi guys - I'm coming back!"

I assume as you read this you have put your clocks forward one hour? Apart from the one on the cooker that everyone forgets. You can't be missing kmfm Breakfast with Rob and Emma. They have £500 just after 8am every week day morning that could be won by you by playing '10 in 30.'

Then drive home with me on kmfm Drivetime from 4pm with Kent's Biggest Hits from Rihanna to Robbie to Olly to Pink. Hey, you know you truly are a superstar when you know who I mean from just their first name.

Then this weekend we are going all 90s. It's a kmfm 'All 90's Winning Weekend.' We will be playing you the biggest hits from a decade that brought us some of the best anthems, sing-a-long tunes and I promise you will have a weekend full of nostalgia. Where were you when Take That first released 'Never Forget?' Were you at a 5ive concert back then? Do you remember the dance moves?

I cannot wait to play you some of these tunes - and more!

Speak to you on your way home on kmfm Drivetime from 4pm.

Paradise just a roll of the dice away...

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Thursday, March 28 2013
What a couple of weeks on kmfm it has been. Every day Monday to Friday we have been giving you the chance to be a step closer to paradise - to Barbados. kmfm's Lucky Dice to Paradise with Baldwin's Travel in association with Kuoni has seen you text and enter online to win a superb holiday to the golden sands and clear waters.

After thousands of entries from listeners across Kent, six finalists made it to the final last Friday at Baldwin's Travel, Maidstone with Emma from kmfm Breakfast. Nick from Baldwin's rolled the dice and the number rolled coincided with the finalists number. If their number was rolled, they were out. After much excitement we got down to two people - Andrew Hubbard and Debbie Matthews, both from Ramsgate. The dice was rolled and Debbie Matthews was shaking as we revealed live on kmfm Breakfast that she was off to Barbados.

Congratulations to Debbie who could not believe her luck. Her children and husband were on the phone to her straight away congratulating her with excitement. She was beaming from ear to ear as she was presented with her tickets to paradise and a bottle of champagne.

Stay listening to kmfm as the winning starts again soon.

If you have been away from your radio recently you would have missed your chance to win £500 on '10 in 30' every morning at 8:10am on kmfm Breakfast with Rob and Emma, plus tickets to see The Script at the o2 as well as Kent's Biggest Hits from The Saturdays, Nicole Scherzinger, One Direction, Emeli Sande and Oli Murs.

It is only a four day week this week - Easter weekend is coming. Much to the delight of all of us, especially if you are lucky enough to have four days off of work. Whether you are staying with friends or family this Easter, chilling out, shopping, have to work or plan to stay in your onesie, keep it kmfm as from Thursday to Bank Holiday Monday for our Easter Double Play weekend. We will be playing you even more of Kent's Biggest Hits from your favourite artists. Meaning you can expect to hear double helpings of Adele, Robbie Williams and Pink.

I'll speak to you on your way home on kmfm Drivetime from 4pm.

Exercise regime pays off for DJ

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Friday, December 14 2012

If you have been listening to kmfm Breakfast with Rob and Emma for the last two months, you will know that Rob has been preparing to get his kit off.

It is all in the name of charity you understand, he is no naturist – although that would make entertaining radio with use of a webcam.

Rewind eight weeks, and Rob’s idea of exercising was walking from the kmfm office to his car and lifting shopping bags from his car to his home. Then co-host Emma had an idea to get him fit for Christmas. Have him looking buff and then show off the results. Now are you listening?

So we asked the listeners where they thought Rob’s new Peter Andre physique should be shown off. Suggestions included one that his image should be projected on front of the White Cliffs of Dover, or that he should appear in a shop window. The winning idea was a calendar.

So, the challenge was on. Rob had to lose weight and become fit, as in eight weeks time he would be removing his top and having his photo taken for a calendar. Personally, I did not think he would stick to the regime of eating a balanced diet, as normally his breakfast consisted of a packet of Fruitellas and a burger for brunch.

But credit where credit is due. Rob went to the gym six days a week at the Village Hotel Maidstone and was put through his paces. I witnessed his gym instructor Olly walk in with a length of rope as thick as the gorillas swing from at Howletts. Rob was made to swing this using his arms. That must have been tough.

Soon Rob’s diet became healthier and his fizzy drinks were no longer consumed and he found this new wonderful source of hydration – water. This would be his new friend, especially after Zumba and spin classes.

Six weeks later and Rob had lost one stone. Brilliant result. He was starting to look different and he remarked how much better he felt, too.

Two weeks later and into the eighth week, it was the day of the calendar photo shoot. The kmfm Breakfast team wanted to recreate an iconic photograph. Ladies, you will remember the 1990s black and white shot of the topless beefcake man holding two tyres?

Rob was to relive that classic pose – at Kwik Fit. With the help of a lighting team and a great photographer – oh, and some grease – Rob did it. He was stripped to the waist, and held up a tyre in each arm and showed off his new guns. Well, I argue that they are more water pistols but he will not listen to me.

So, the calendar is complete and we received them last week. OH DO THEY LOOK GREAT – and you can buy them. Rob and Emma asked listeners to nominate a charity they would like the money go to. The team chose three charities and they are: The Bridge Trust in Tunbridge Wells, which supports the homeless across Kent; Catch 22, 16 plus, based in Ashford, which helps 16- to 22-year- olds coming out of care; thirdly, Foxwood School in Hythe, which helps support pupils with severe disabilities and their families.

I know what you are now thinking: “How do I get myself one of these calendars?” Stay listening to kmfm Breakfast with Rob and Emma and they will tell you how – and thank you in advance for helping us raise money for the charities who are doing such wonderful work.

You can get your hands on one of Rob’s calendars – and support the three fantastic local charities in the process – by going along to:

:: Foxwood School reception, Seabrook Road, Hythe during school hours

:: Furniture Warehouse, 9 Cannon Lane, Tonbridge TN9 1PP (Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm)

Think before you eat brussels sprouts

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Friday, November 30 2012

Nobody likes brussels sprouts. Some people say that they do but I just don’t believe them. Brussels are simply shrunk cabbages that have the taste of a half-mashed swede – yuk!

I know that some of you may disagree and insist you are a brussels lover – but come on be honest, you don’t really like them, do you?

I made the same bold statement that nobody likes the evil little green things on kmfm Drivetime last week and I clearly struck a nerve as I have never seen the phonelines light up so much telling me how wrong I was!

Were you pulling my leg?

Some of our listeners claimed that brussels are lovely and taste wonderful covered in cheese and cooked in garlic. I think you are simply adding ingredients to them to try and make them taste better!

There was even a suggestion that they taste great covered in curry sauce – that’s just wrong on so many levels.

We allow brussels on to our plates every Christmas Day – and what happens? We stare at them and ask ourselves the same questions, “What’s the worse that can happen if I just try the one?”

What’s more, we feel obliged to eat them – especially if we are guests on Christmas Day.

But even worse than eating them is what happens next. Why do we put our body through what happens after the Queen’s speech?

As a nation, we can usually set our watches by the hilarious after effects as homes up and down the UK echo to the immortal words, “I shouldn’t have had those sprouts!”

So you see, nobody really likes brussels. No one could tell me during my show what it was exactly that made them attractive to their palate.

Why do we love peanut butter? It is simply the nutty texture and the warmth of the paste.

Why do we love a roast dinner? It is the succulent cut of the meat and the added taste once the gravy has been poured upon it.

So have a good think about those brussels sprouts next time you see them sitting at the supermarket looking up at you, wondering if you are going to pick them up and take them home.

Just think about the repercussions – at the dinner table and on the sofa.

Christmas is coming... but Kent's divided

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Friday, November 23 2012

Is November too early to be playing Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You - or even Fairytale In New York come to that?

That is what I was asking on kmfm Drivetime last week. I know there are five weeks to go until Christmas but Coke’s ‘Holidays are coming’ TV advert aired during the X Factor two weeks ago and to me that means Christmas has started. The lovable John Lewis snowman advert is capturing our attention too, so Mariah’s top festive tune is acceptable, right?

Kent was divided with their answers so I held off from playing it – for now.

But whatever happens, the festivities are just around the corner and I’m looking forward to them with the same excitement as the children have in the Coca-Cola ad when they see the lorry approaching. But why has no one ever questioned what a 50 tonne lorry is doing driving through a village?

The biggest A list celebrities to grace us with their presence recently have been Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The Hollywood stars have been living in Ickham, near Canterbury, whilst Brad finished his forthcoming zombie movie World War Z. With this in mind I was asking on kmfm Drivetime, “Have you ever physically touched a celebrity?” For example, has someone on TV brushed past you? Has a star shaken your hand?

Nick called me to say he stood next to Des Lynam at the urinals at a Kent golf club. He was claiming air was the physical contact so I could not ‘grade’ his effort. However, Ceri from the coast called to say she once received a kiss on both cheeks from actor Ray Winstone. He’s a big name so I graded that a seven out of 10. Then followed a succession of celebrity stories; Sarah Hodgkinson revealed that Jonathan Ross was behind her as she exited a plane and he breathed on her hair. He’s a TV household name– that was also a seven out of 10.

Lynnette Hanson measured the inside of Wet Wet Wet’s Marti Pelow’s leg. That’s impressive and received eight out of 10. Denise Bottali posted on Facebook to say she once drove her trolley into Joanna Lumley’s heel at Safeway in Canterbury. Not only was there physical contact, but Denise nearly injured a celebrity – and that is a totally new topic!

Stay listening to kmfm as you can win Kent’s Biggest Hits throughout December. Not only are we playing you the biggest hits, we are now giving you the chance to win them too. Plus, we have the biggest artists taking over kmfm over Christmas. JLS and The Wanted are just two of the bands you can hear soon. Speak to you on the way home!
