Up close and personal with Union J

by Tuned In, with kmfm Breakfast Show's Emma Saint Monday, June 17 2013

I want to start this week’s column by saying a huge thank you to everyone who came along and took part in the Pink Ribbon walk at Leeds Castle last weekend!

The organisers asked me to lead the sponsored stroll in aid of Breast Cancer Care and we had so much fun marching through the castle’s beautiful grounds.

Loads of people turned up and there was a great atmosphere.

It was fantastic to see everyone in their pink costumes – even a couple of the dogs being walked were wearing pink!

It was been a great week on kmfm Breakfast, and one of the highlights was talking to Union J.

The boyband appeared on ITV’s X Factor last year, reaching the final four in the talent show, and they chatted to my co-presenter Rob Wills and I about their debut single Carry You, which was released this month.

The foursome will also be back in Kent in July to perform at the Sound Island Festival in Quex Park, Birchington, and they said they were really looking forward to it.

The boys were really down to earth and chatty, and we had a good laugh with them. They even played 10 in 30!

Rob and I will be at Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre in Gillingham on Friday, June 21.

We will be playing games and giving away loads of cool prizes for the whole family.

I don’t want to give away too much but it is a fashion event so I will have full control over Rob’s wardrobe for an hour!

Make sure you come and find out what I dress him in! We will be there between 5pm and 7pm..

Gearing up for top live music at Kent's summer music festivals

by Tuned In, with kmfm Breakfast Show's Emma Saint Friday, May 31 2013

You might not think it, with the gloomy weather we have been having, but it is officially summer.

One of my favourite things about the summer is going to music festivals with friends, and I am really excited about the huge range of events on offer here in Kent. I am particularly looking forward to Music on the Hill at Kings Hill in July.Jools Holland

There are some great acts lined up during the three-day festival, including Jools Holland, McFly, and one of my old-school favourites, Peter Andre.

Best of all, Music on the Hill is a fundraising event in aid of Demelza Hospice Care for Children and Teens Unite Fighting Cancer and 100% of the profits generated will be donated to these causes.

So rain or shine, I will definitely be there. And even if it does rain, it won’t matter. I will just have to don my rather fetching zebra-print wellies!

I hope you had a great Bank Holiday weekend, and if you have children, that you are all enjoying a fantastic half term!

When I was at school, I remember thinking there were never enough holidays, and when they did come round they always went so quickly!

But now I find myself listening to my best friend telling me the days couldn’t go any slower and her seven-year-old is driving her nuts because she can’t sit still!

At least there are lots of places to visit in Kent to keep little ones occupied – although I reckon some of the best things are the ones that cost no money at all. When I was little my mum and dad would help us put up a tent in the garden and my brother and I would pack it full of all our toys and games then get midnight snacks ready and camp in the garden! And if the weather wasn’t so good we just made a den under the dining table!

Emma will be using her new watersports skills during her holiday in Newquay

If you are a regular listener to the kmfm Breakfast Show with myself and Rob Wills, then you will know I’m a woman who likes a bargain. I am always collecting vouchers and finding codes online to get discounts, and my latest achievement is a cheap weekend staying at a caravan park in Newquay!

I will be heading up there on Friday afternoon, and my fingers are crossed the weather stays good so I can use the new skills I have been learning as part of our promotion with Active Coast, a campaign run by Visit Kent to get more people enjoying Kent’s beautiful coastline.

My presenter Rob Wills and I have been trying our hand at activities around the county and giving away prizes of family days out to lucky listeners. Hopefully I won’t embarrass myself too much!

A night out with a saucy edge

by Tuned In, with kmfm Breakfast Show's Emma Saint Friday, May 17 2013

I want to start this week’s column by saying a huge thank you to everyone who jumped on board with our Go Dotty charity events!

They started in Gillingham, and have been taking place in Tunbridge Wells, Ashford, and Maidstone, finishing at Demelza's site in Sittingbourne last Friday. kmfm teamed up with Demelza children’s hospice to hold 10 tea parties in 10 days around the county.

Visitors were able to enjoy some tea and delicious cake while watching some great live entertainment, with a special appearance by Little Miss Dotty at some of the events.

We don't know how much has been raised yet, but all funds will be going to Demelza, a very worthy cause.

To find out more about Demelza visit www.demelza.org.uk

We work very hard here at kmfm, so now and then I like to let my hair down and enjoy a fun girlie night out with my friends.

I have suggested for our next outing we might go and see a saucy new show coming to the Churchill Theatre in Bromley next week – The Dreamboys.

I haven’t ever seen a ‘male glamour’ show before, so now the hunks are coming to Kent, it seems like the perfect opportunity! What would be your top suggestions for a girlie evening out in Kent? Email me at kmfmbreakfast@thekmgroup.co.uk

When getting active is real fun

by Tuned In, with kmfm Breakfast Show's Emma Saint Friday, April 26 2013

Active Coast is a campaign run by Visit Kent to get more people enjoying the county’s coastline. It’s all about making the most of the beautiful surroundings that are right on our doorstep as well as keeping active and having a great time.

With summer quickly approaching Rob Wills - my co-presenter on kmfm Breakfast – and I thought we should go and check out some of the activities on offer.

We started off with a spot bit of kayaking at Greatstone. I’m not going to lie, the water wasn’t quite as warm as when you go abroad on holiday but you soon warm up! If you’ve never been in a kayak before but you like the sound of water sports then you should definitely consider going along.

You are given all of your equipment and told how to sit in the kayak and hold the paddles so that you aren’t wobbling all over the place. Trust me its easier than it looks and you’ll pick it up quicker than you think.

After the kayaking we headed to Lydd Lakes to try a bit of water skiing. Now I’ve been very lucky to ski from a young age so I was really excited about this activity. The instructors take you through all the basic safety requirements and make you feel really at ease. Once I had my wet suit on I started to get a little nervous – worrying I may be thrown in the air at 100mph.

I shouldn’t have worried, it didn’t happen like that at all and when I finally stood up I loved it. Its such a great feeling, hurtling across the water. What’s more it’s a real buzz being able to enjoying these activities in Kent rather than having to go elsewhere to experience these activities.

If you don’t fancy the water sports then why not check out a bit of cycling on some of Kent’s cycle routes? You can even join the long distance North Downs Way, following the historic Pilgrims Way to Canterbury like the old medieval travellers or discover the ancient fortifications along the Saxon Shore Way that runs all along the Kent coast.

There really is something for all the family and if you want more information on any of the activities on offer you can head to www.kentsplash.co.uk. This will also give you details of places close to your chosen activities plus where you can relax and enjoy some good food afterwards!

Fun and fudge make for fantastic day out

by Tuned In, with kmfm Breakfast Show's Emma Saint Friday, April 19 2013

Well, after months of freezing cold weather, thank goodness it is finally starting to warm up.

All right, it still might not be quite time to put away the woolly jumpers, but some spring sunshine is better than none and what better way to enjoy it than looking around some of Kent’s great attractions.

I only moved to the county in September, so I’m still exploring the many lovely places on my doorstep. I decided to head over to Canterbury the other day with my partner and we had a wonderful time.

After walking around the city, we decided to take a romantic trip down the river on a punting boat. It only cost us £8 each for a 40-minute journey. We were given blankets if we wanted them and our tour guide told us all about the city’s history.

We finished our day with a visit to the Fudge Kitchen next to the cathedral, where we got to taste some of the best fudge I’ve ever eaten – and saw it being made. It was a great way to welcome spring.

As you may remember, I have embarked upon ice skating lessons at Gillingham’s Silver Blades ice rink. Well, I have good news – I have gone up a class! There are 10 grades, with 10 being champion standard and I am now classed as grade 6. I have really been enjoying it and was so pleased when my instructor said it was time for me to change classes.

I am now learning with some amazing skaters who are much better than me but being around them really pushes me to do better.

I am hoping to head along to see Sleeping Beauty On Ice at Dartford’s Orchard Theatre when it opens on Wednesday, May 1.

It stars Olga Sharutenko, one of the professionals on ITV show Dancing on Ice and I can’t wait to see such an amazing skater perform.

Next week kmfm is joining up with children’s hospice Demelza House for 10 tea parties in 10 days.

The fun starts at 3.30pm on Monday, April 22, at the King Charles Hotel in Gillingham and then we will be visiting Ashford’s Eastwell Manor, Dunkerley’s in Deal, the Coniston Hotel in Sittingbourne, the Ashford International Hotel, the Village Hotel in Maidstone and Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium.

In addition to enjoying tea and treats, there will be live entertainment and the chance to win top prizes.

We really hope lots of people will come along to support us.

Misha B brings star quality to kmfm

by Tuned In, with kmfm Breakfast Show's Emma Saint Friday, April 12 2013

Well, it has been an exciting week here at kmfm and one of the highlights was meeting X Factor star Misha B.

She came in to see us at the studios on Monday, to introduce her new song Here’s To Everything (Ooh La La). It was a pleasure to chat to her, as she was quirky and fun and was telling us about how much her life has changed since she appeared in the X Factor back in 2011.

She admitted that some parts of the experience were hard, particularly when there was some bad feedback in the press when she was at the centre of bullying allegations but she’s pleased she entered and has used the experience to push herself onwards and upwards to success.

I am a huge fan of talent shows such as X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and The Voice, so it was interesting to hear from a contestant what it’s like to take part in one.

Now, I recently wrote in this column that I have started hitting the gym and having personal training sessions and I’m pleased to be able to report that I’m starting to see results.

I have also been trying to eat more healthily, so I was delighted to read recently that one of my favourite restaurants – Nando’s – has been included in a new list of the 10 healthiest places to eat out.

So now I have a lovely excuse to eat out there – that sorts out my plans for the weekend!

If you fancy joining me in trying to achieve your dream beach body ahead of the summer, my advice would be to give yourself incentives, such as allowing yourself a small treat for every one hour workout. My new healthy regime is certainly working out for me – fingers crossed, I can keep it up!

The kids are currently off school for the Easter holidays, so I had the pleasure of looking after my beautiful goddaughter for two days.

I decided to take her to Dickens World in Chatham and I have to say it was brilliant! Professional actors and tour guides take you on a fabulous journey, bringing to life Dickens’ many colourful characters and offering an insight into Victorian life during Dickens’ time.

Although it is predominantly aimed at kids, I really enjoyed it and thought it was interesting, so if you haven’t been, I suggest you check it out. It’s a cheap day out and will keep the kids occupied for a few hours!

Meeting boyband won't leave me Blue

by Tuned In, with kmfm Breakfast Show's Emma Saint Friday, April 5 2013

I’ll start this column by saying happy Easter! I know it’s late, but let’s be honest, if you’re anything like me, you will still be scoffing the remains of your chocolate Easter eggs.

Last week, I told you I had followed in the footsteps of my co-presenter Rob Wills and started personal training sessions to try and get my body beach ready for summer.

But sadly I have already undone some of my hard work after indulging in a huge amount of chocolate, hot cross buns and other Easter treats!

Although I am hoping to burn off some calories when I will be attending a Justin Timberlake-style dance class at The Brook Theatre in Chatham.

We will be dancing our hearts out to some of the superstar’s popular tunes, learning routines with professional dancer Jay before performing a showcase for family and friends at the end of the day.

Hopefully I won’t be the only adult reliving my childhood dream of being a cool popstar!

Talking of popstars, I am really looking forward to talking to boyband Blue on the kmfm Breakfast show on Monday morning.

They recently burst back on to our TV screens with other Nineties and Noughties pop groups including Atomic Kitten, 5ive and B*Witched in ITV2 show The Big Reunion, following them as they prepare for a big comeback concert.

I was totally addicted to the show, which offered a great insight into the bands we all used to listen to and love, and I was really disappointed to find that when I went to get tickets for the Big Reunion tour they had all sold out!

Not even eBay have them for under £100, so I think I’ll be listening to my old CDs instead. Gutted!

Let me know if you have any questions you would like to ask Blue. Email them to me at kmfmbreakfast@thekmgroup.co.uk.

I am delighted to report that Saturday night TV has suddenly got good again! BBC talent show The Voice returned to our screens last week and we also have the return of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway on ITV.

This is by far my favourite programme on television at the moment. I particularly loved the recent show when they decided to give us a blast from the past and get back on stage to relive their PJ & Duncan days with a performance of Let’s Get Ready to Rhumble!

The pair originally had a hit with the song in 1994, and it’s had a surprise resurgence, going to the top of the charts. I have to confess that I was among those who downloaded the original on iTunes straight after the show.

Cleaning up with fitness regime

by Tuned In, with kmfm Breakfast Show's Emma Saint Thursday, March 28 2013

So spring is officially here – not that you would know it yet from the weather, though I’m hoping we are in for a few more sunny days in the weeks to come! I have to get up very early in the morning for the Breakfast Show and it is so much easier to get out of bed when we are out of the dark days of winter. There really is no better feeling in the world than starting your day when the sun is rising and the birds are singing!

With summer just around the corner, you may have heard me on the Breakfast Show talking about my strict new diet regime and my new project to try to get into shape. We asked listeners for some tips on the best ways to get fit and their suggestions were hilarious!

One female listener said she does a unusual secret exercise when she’s driving her car - clenching her bum cheeks while sat at traffic lights. It apparently gives you the ultimate toned behind! I must admit I have started trying it - and will let you know if it has any impact!

Apparently cleaning is another great way to get into shape. Mopping floors works your shoulders and biceps and burns around 112 calories in 30 minutes, hoovering for 30 minutes works your arms and biceps and can burn up to 240 calories, while gardening for an hour works your arms, legs and core and you can burn a whopping 258 calories! And if you’re like me and crank the music up and dance while you’re doing it, then chances are you’ll probably be burning a lot more!

I’ve also started working with a personal trainer. You may remember that at Christmas my co-host Rob Wills was forced to get into shape after we set him the challenge of posing topless for a charity calendar! He needed more than a bit of help so we got him a personal trainer and after seeing the results, it’s made me take the plunge.

I’ve been training for two hours a week with Michael Tuohy who offers sessions all over Kent from the comfort of your own home or at LA Fitness in Maidstone. He is also a nutritionist so is advising on me on how I can change my diet to make sure I’m eating the right foods but still have a few naughty treats.

The great thing about having a personal trainer is it gives you the motivation you need to keep you going and when you start to see results it’s really satisfying I’ve had one hour session twice a week for three weeks now and I’m already noticing the difference.

My body fat has gone down and I’ve lost six pounds! Before I started the sessions Michael gave me a full health check and we began charting my weight and body fat so that we could set goals for me to achieve. I’m improving every session and I feel like I have a lot more energy. Why join if me in getting fit? Let me know how you get on.

Close shave was a real grower for charity

by Tuned In, with kmfm Breakfast Show's Emma Saint Friday, March 22 2013

I briefly thought of being a hairdresser when I was younger, and I got an insight into what it might have been like when I shaved the head of my kmfm Breakfast co-presenter Rob Wills last week.

To raise money for Red Nose Day, Rob volunteered to have his head shaved, and kmfm Drivetime presenter Andy Walker will be growing his hair for a month. It was brilliant fun getting the clippers out on Rob.

We did it live on air, and had a lot of reaction from listeners, who thought it was hilarious. Rob is normally quite vain about his hair, and will be saving about £100 a month on hair products, so he generously donated £250 to Comic Relief which is fantastic.

On the subject of another good cause, cyclists across the county are getting into gear for this year’s Ride2Raise South Coast Spectacular, a 140-mile cycle ride from Brighton to Weymouth in aid of charity The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT).

They include Gillingham mum Julie Firth, inspired to take part by her brave seven-year-old daughter Isla, who lost an eye after suffering from a rare form of cancer when she was younger.

Julie, of South Avenue, hasn’t cycled regularly for 10 years, and she has been training really hard to get ready for the May event. I am planning to help keep her company on her long rides, as I have experience of what she’s going through, since I took part in the event for the first time last year.

I couldn’t have been more unprepared – I didn’t even have a bike – but decided to do it as one of my old teachers from school had a son who was born with the eye cancer retinoblastoma.

I bought a bike and started to do laps at a local park every day, eventually getting up to 20 miles every day. When it came to the actual ride I was excited but nervous. We set off and the Ride2Raise team and the other riders were lovely – everyone helped and encouraged everyone else and the views were amazing. As the wind gushes through your hair, nothing else matters. It is an incredible feeling.

Julie set a fundraising target of £1,000 – which she has reached – so now she has a gruelling training challenge ahead of her before this year’s ride starts on May 5.

If you would like to get involved or help sponsor Julie then email me at emma@kmfm.com or visit www.justgiving.com/Julie-Firth1.

Trying to be a nice ice baby

by Tuned In, with kmfm Breakfast Show's Emma Saint Saturday, March 16 2013
Summer may seem like a long way off, but organisers of music festivals in the county including Canterbury’s Lounge on the Farm and Hevy Fest at Port Lympne are beginning to announce their headline acts.

I am really excited by the line-up announced so far for the Sound Island Music Festival at Quex Park, with stars including Rita Ora and Plan B.

I went to my first festival last year – V Festival – and had a great time, despite torrential rain on the last day. I am a big animal print fan, and I can’t wait to pack up my zebra tent, don my zebra wellies and get along to some of Kent’s events. Hopefully we will have a lovely summer and I won’t need the wellies!

Having only lived in Kent for about six months, I’m trying to do as many things as possible within the area, and I have just embarked upon my latest project – ice skating lessons!

I have signed up for a six-week course at Silver Blades ice rink in Gillingham, in the hope of being at least being able to make it around the whole rink once at the end.

Before I turned up to my first lesson, I was really nervous, like a child on the first day of school. I didn’t know what to expect, and worried that I would be the worst one there. But as soon as I arrived, I realised I wasn’t the only one who seemed to be a tad wobbly - and didn’t want to let go of the barrier! But our coach Nicky soon coaxed us away from the edge, and even showed us how to touch our toes on the ice and go backwards!

During a break I watched some of the other more experienced skaters, who were able to perform some impressive moves, doing what looked like 100 turns in a minute, jumping backwards and even the splits! Back on the ice, I decided to have a go at a twirl, but to my dismay as I went to turn I skidded two feet in the air and landed with a nasty smack on the floor. More of a beached whale than a graceful swan! I may not be quite ready for Dancing on Ice, but it hasn’t put me off.

I’m continuing the lessons and I will be showing off my moves in the Broadway Ice Show at Gillingham ice rink on Sunday, April 14. If you fancy coming along, tickets are £5, available at Silver Blade’s reception, or by calling them on 01634 388477.
