Express Yourself with summer anthems

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Friday, June 8 2012

Listen out for some big summer anthems on kmfm.

It is always going to be a hard thing to match the success of a mega hit and Maroon 5 know that.

Moves Like Jagger still is a mammoth anthem and I mentioned last week that they will be back with a new hit. Payphone will be exactly that.

I have three things to say about Katy Perry. One, I love her, two, I love her and three she does not stop giving us hit after hit. Her new offering is called Wide Awake.

It is about a break up and, of course, critics are automatically going to suggest the lyrics are about Katy’s ex Russell Brand.

Perhaps there are some elements as Katy says major life changes were an inspiration. Having said that, the song was specifically written for her forthcoming movie.

My new favourite song is from Labrinth. Express Yourself is one of those tunes with a ditty beat that will hook you in and have you turning it up loud.

I can hear the song right now as I am typing. “Exxxxpress, yourself.” You may remember he sang this song about a month ago on one of the Britain’s Got Talent shows.

The track samples an old Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band song from 1971. Quite a mouthful of band. Can you imagine the X Factor voiceover man introducing them? Express Yourself is also one of the big summer 2012 tunes.

This year is all about the anthem. Cheryl, Carly Rae Jepson, Tulisa and Train. Here are the 10 most requested songs that kmfm are playing you right now are:

1. Cheryl – Call My Name

2. David Guetta – Titanium

3. Fun – We Are Young

4. Jessie J – Laserlight

5. Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know

6. Train – Drive By

7. Katy Perry – Part Of Me

8. The Saturdays – Thirty Days

9. The Wanted – Chasing The Sun

10. Tulisa – Young

As well as the anthems, this summer is all about the big Kent concerts. The Hop Farm and Lounge on the Farm are both going to be two of the biggest talked-about musical events. Even Bruce Forsyth is in on the action with his own band at Paddock Wood and to have Emeli Sande in the county in Canterbury for Lounge on the Farm is going to cause a big buzz.

Bring on the summer!

Getting in the mood for a scorching summer - even if the weather's a washout

by Tuned In, with kmfm DJ Andy Walker Tuesday, May 1 2012

This year’s Kent festival season is really taking shape.

Over the last few weeks, Bruce Forsyth has been added to the Hop Farm Festival along with former Verve frontman, Richard Ashcroft, who will be making his only UK performance this year. When The Verve split, Ashcroft said there was more chance of The Beatles getting back together than his band.

Yet that statement came back to bite him when the band reformed the original line up in 2007 and released the album Forth in 2008. It wasn’t very well received and with his success as a solo artist, I think Richard is in a bit of a Harry Hill scenario: “I like The Verve and I also like Richard Ashcroft. Which is better?”

I did not realise Bruce Forsyth had a band, but he is bringing them with him when he takes to the stage this summer at Paddock Wood.

His performance is certainly going to draw in crowds from all generations – that’s the great thing about Brucie. Take away the bad jokes, forgive the wig and you have one of our greatest entertainers.

As we move toward the summer, an idea of the kind of red hot sounds we can expect to hear this year are emerging.

One to keep an ear out for is The Wanted. The band have come back with a new direction and Chasing The Sun is their new single.

The track has been written and produced by dance artist Example – it is a catchy, sing-a-long number that will have crowds waving their hands in the air at festivals across the country this summer. Let’s just hope it’s a scorcher.

Bruce Forysth’s wig screaming “keep dancing”

by The TV Thoms Monday, October 4 2010

IT is nice to see Bruce Forsyth’s wig back on the television. At 82-years-old it is still going strong and frankly, has never looked better. I suppose Bruce Forsyth’s wig was a good choice to host Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1, Saturday, 5.45pm). When it unnervingly grabs hold of Vernon Kay’s wife (whatever she’s called) and gives her a twirl, it’s always a thrill.

As usual the dazzling-dance-drudgery - complete with a new title sequence - is filled to the gusset with electrifying oven-ready celebrity names such as Ann Widecombe.

But who will face the sparkly-spangly-super-sad axe this Saturday? As Bruce Forsyth’s wig says: It’s time to meet the stars of our show.

Will it be Felicity Kendal, best known for being a year older than Ann Widecombe; a rugby player best known for splitting up with Charlotte Church; Goldie Teeth, famed for coming fourth in Celebrity Mastermind; Jimi Mistry, renowned for living in Birmingham or that bird off EastEnders who went out with James from Busted and Joe Swash.

Then there’s Allsmiles Baker, prominent in his love of dogs and sellotape;  Michelle Williams, notorious for her Ronald McDonald charity work; Pamela Stephenson, who was in Superman III; Patsy Kensit, married four times and celebrated for her love of frozen peas or  Paul Daniels, infamous for his love of sausages and Debbie (I know people complained about him being homophobic, but it was all about National Sausage Week, just see lovepork.co.uk for more. Don't visit ilovepork.co.uk like I did.)

Moving on, there's Peter Shilton who memorably won the FA Charity Shield in 1971 with Leicester City; Scott Maslen, very familiar to viewers of BBC1 for being 39-years-old and Tina O’Brien, best known for dating both Jason Grimshaw and Todd Grimshaw from Coronation Street, but not at the same time (unlike in Coronation Street).

So who can wait until Saturday night, 5.45pm for the next dance off? I think you can ring up or something and get rid of the people you don’t like.

For what its worth, I’d like to see Tina O’Brien and Kara Tointon get through to whatever-the-last-one-of-the-show-is-called, and then have them dance in mud while Ann Widecombe blows into a whistle, shouting at them for not falling over enough.

Bruce Forysth’s wig would be sitting behind the judge’s desk screaming “keep dancing,” while Tess Daly was strapped to a roundabout and spun around endlessly by Anton Du Beke, wearing a skin-tight silver suit and crash helmet shouting “bring on the wall”.

The whole series would end when everyone who voted for someone to be booted off, finds their phones have exploded. Then maybe they'll put Total Wipeout back on.
